Erin Hunter

By: Alexandra Barnes

Erin Hunter is an amazing person, but she is not a real person. Erin Hunter is a pen name for 3 people. Cherith Balderly, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes make up Erin Hunter. I am mostly going to talk about Cherith Balderly.  If you don’t know her by name, she is the one with 2 sons.

Cherith Balderly grew up in Lancaster, England. She went to Manchester University and St. Anne’s College.  She was a lecturer and teacher and was married to Peter Balderly.  She had two sons named Will and Adam. Charith loves writing battle scenes just like Kate Cary. She is interested in astrology, history, king Arthur, and mythology.  Kate Cary also likes some of those things. if you noticed how Kate Cary and Cherith are a lot alike, that is why they work together sometimes.

Cherith wrote many books, some series were The Silver Horn, The Emerald Throne, Warriors, and The Lake of Darkness. She wrote many novels too, like A Rush of Golden Wings, Drew’s Talents, Cradock Quest, and many others. In a series called Warriors, she enjoys writing battle scenes and makes up the cats own mythology.  Also, her 2 cats Bramble and Sorrel in the book are the characters Bramble Claw and Sorrel Tail.

Cherith was not the only writer.  Like I said earlier, there is also Kate Cary and Victoria Holms.  Kate Cary always loved cats and animal behavior.  She sometimes works with Charith Balderly, and for some of the battle scenes she takes walks in the woods and watches her cats. She’s not afraid of writing the times with a lot of blood and battle.  Kate has written Into The Wild, Rising Storm, Fire and Ice, and The sight.  Victoria Holmes grew up inEngland and learned to ride horses when she was 2, but liked writing better.  She loved history.  Now she works in London and rides horses or walks her dog Missy in her spare time.   Tui T. Sutherland also helped.  She has a dog named Sunshine.

In conclusion, Erin Hunter is an amazing three writers. I recommend that you try the books by Erin Hunter, Charith Balderly, Victoria Holmes, and Tui T. Sutherland.  Tui T. Sutherland also writes under the pen name Heather Williams.  Who knows, maybe Charith’s sons will be writers one day too.

China Town

By: Alex B.

China town is a very interesting place with lots of Chinese culture from past and present. China town has many places.  Two of the main ones that divide China town in half is old Chinatown and new Chinatown. When our third grade class went to Chinatown we visited old and new China town. Both old and new China town are interesting. While we were there I noticed that new China is more colorful town than old China town. But, first I’m going to talk about old Chinatown.

When our class visited old china town we went to a Buddhism temple.  Buddhism means you believe in Buddha. You were not allowed to wear shoes in the temple and it smelled different in there. That was because they burnt little sticks when they prayed. There were two girl Buddha’s in there-the Chinese version and the Indian version. The main difference was the art. The Chinese version looked more Asian and the Indian version looks more Indian, another difference in the art was that the Indian version of the girl had altogether one thousand arms. Some arms held weapons, the arms were called “helping hands”.

After we left there we visited a square with all the animals of the Chinese calendar: the dragon is energetic, wise and the most awesome of all symbolized animals. The rabbit is the most lucky and energetic. The pig is loving, a good person and gets along well with other people. The rat is sneaky, popular and short temperd. The Ox is trust-worthy, dependable and hot tempered.   Tigers are brave and challenging.  Snakes are smart, graceful, and think things through. Goats, also called lambs or rams, get off on the wrong foot with people and are the first ones to complain. Horses are loyal friends but are not good in a team and aren’t the best sports. Monkeys are good problem solvers, think about what there doing and finish what the set there mind to. Roosters talk a lot and work hard. They also brag often. Dogs are loyal friends and worry a lot. Pigs or boars are loyal friends but bite off more than they can chew. That was all twelve animals of the calendar.

After our class was done there, we went to new China town. In new china town we went to a restaurant. I'm not going to talk about any specific places but I am going to talk about Chinese food. Some Chinese foods are… chop suey, egg rolls, noodles, sweet and sour chicken, and of course rice. Chinese people are known for their noodles and rice. If you’ve had any thing called “pot stickers” that was a Chinese mistake that became a real food. We also saw a portrait that represented the Chinese history until China town. It showed symbols of them in China, immigrating to America and places they mostly live in now like mini China’s all over the U.S. That’s where out trip ended. I can’t wait until our next fieldtrip.

Robert Goddard

By:  Alex B.
Robert Hutchins Goddard was born on October 5th, 1882. His father was a Boston machine shop owner. He went to college at Clark University. He earned a Ph.D in physics a Clark University and a B.S. from Worcester college. He was an assistant professor at Clark University when he first started experimenting with the efficiency of rockets in the year 1915. He measured their thrust with a ballistic pendulum. Later in the year 1920, he had the idea that a rocket might be able to reach the moon. He proved this with many, many experiments. On March 16th, 1926 Richard Goddard flight-tested his liquid fueled rocket for the first time. On July 1929, Richard Goddard launched the first rocket carrying a barometer and a camera. At the time most people thought Richard Goddard was insane because of some of his experiments, because of this Massachusetts banned him from experimenting in their state. Also because of his believed insanity, not many people wanted him experimenting near them either. Charles Lindbergh helped him get a grant from a philosopher, named Daniel Guggenheim. He did his experiments in Roswell, New Mexico. Some of the things he invented were, gyroscopic controls, exhaust deflection steering, rapid combustion fuels, and power driven fuel pumps.

A Look Into
Robert Hutchens Goddard’s  Diary

The following sentences are Robert  Goddard's own words coming from his own diary.

  • “ It was one of the quiet, colorful afternoons of sheer beauty which we have often in October in New England, and I looked toward the fields in the east, I imagined  how wonderful it would be to make some device which had even the possibility of ascending to mars, and how it would look on a small scale if sent up from the meadow at my feet.”
“ I was a different boy when I descended the tree. From when I ascended, for existence at last seemed very purposive.”

General Cat Care
When you adopt a pet, you are adopting an animal, along with the responsibility to take care of
it. You have to take care of your animal properly, or any thing could happen. This article tells you how to take care of your cat. Or  if you don’t have one but plan to get one, it has suggestions on picking the right breed for you. I hope you find all information in this article useful.
Cat Feed
There are two main types of cat food, hard and moist. Hard food is better for your cats teeth. It scrapes off plaque while your cat is chewing. A lot of time, cats prefer moist food, possibly because it tastes better. I would recommend normally giving hard food but serving moist food as a treat as most about once a month. Cat food is made specifically for cats, other food is not. Never give cats dairy unless recommended by a vet. Most people think milk is  a good treat for cats. But really, it can give them stomache aches later on. If your cat is bored of it’s food try mixing tuna, ripped ham-or any other meat, and serve it with the cats normal food.
Cat Breeds
When you adopt a cat you should look for the breed
that suits you best. If you love playing with animals and have
time to kill, you can go for a more energetic cat. Suggestions:
Abbysians are extremely affectionate and energetic, they love
to climb. Somalis are basically long haired Abbysians. The
Cornish Rex is a loving companion and is very curious. The
Egyptian Mau is both elegant and active. If you love your pet
but don’t have enough time for him/her, a self entertaining cat
is good. Suggestions: The Devon Rex will amuse it self all day
hiding and  playing with any shiny thing it can get it’s paws on.
The Main coon is a relaxed easy going cat that prefers to just
hang around thee house, they can become extremely attached
to their owners but always have to be the boss. The Bombay, or
black cat is very friendly, relaxed, and good with people. The
Chartreux is quiet, calm and independent, they are good at
adapting to living in an apartment or out in the country.

                                       Cat hygiene
Depending on the breed of your cat you will need to groom it  differently. Long haired cats need to be brushed once a day or their fur gets tangled into huge knots that have to be cut off. Short haired cats don’t need to be brushed as much, about once every three days. Cats groom them selves so you don’t need to give them baths. (unless your vet tells you to give them one) Cats also need their nails clipped. Cats claws are too long if they start curving under the paw. Cats don’t need their teeth brushed, but if you want to take extra good care of your cats teeth, you can brush them with special pet tooth paste and brushes from a pet store.
Play Time
Cats need exercise just like every other living creature. The most common and possibly the best way to exercise your cat is to play with her/him. Some cats will play with anything and everything, other cats wont. A lot of house hold items can be used as toys, but you still have to be careful what give to your cat. One of the most common and simple toys is a string. You can hold it high to make them jump, you can drag it to make them run and chase, or you can randomly wiggle it randomly to get them to pounce. Another sweet and simple toy is a stick you can throw it or wave it. Cats also like balls and any thing that makes funny noises.
Dangerous Items
Many items are dangerous to cats, sadly cats love investigating those items. After all, curiosity killed the cat. The following listed items are some of the dangerous objects to cats. Feathers and ribbon can choke them, pins and needles can tear up their insides if they swallow them, antifreeze can poison them, chicken bones can be crunched into tiny pieces and cut there throat, and there are many, many more dangerous items that can harm your cat. Always be careful with what you leave in your cats reach.
I hope that every thing in this article helped you, and that you will take care of your pets. Cats are brilliant wonderful creatures, and if you chose to adopt one, it is important to take good care of it. Remember, when you adopt an animal, you adopt the responsibility to take good care of it as well.
